Moving to South Carolina

Charleston

Whether you’re moving across the state or within the same area, there are many notable destinations to consider. If your budget allows, consider the heart of the Lowcountry region: Charleston. This popular destination is the oldest and largest city in South Carolina. Its history exudes charm, with residents living in pastel antebellum homes, strolling cobblestone streets, and being footsteps away from iconic church steeples. Nearby, Mount Pleasant, the state’s third-largest city, features the iconic Ravenel Bridge overlooking the Cooper River. The Charleston metropolitan area also boasts many beautiful beaches, including Johns Island, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, and Folly Beach.

Greenville

On the opposite end of the Palmetto State is Greenville, located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As the largest city in the Upstate area, Greenville has seen its downtown revitalized, fueled by major corporations like GE Power and Michelin. Just outside Greenville, Five Forks ranks among the best places to live due to its low crime rate, thriving economy, and excellent schools. Other notable cities include Mauldin, Simpsonville, and Clemson, which offer small-town vibes and recreational outdoor activities while still being close to the city’s amenities.

Columbia

Columbia, the state capital, is a vibrant city known for its downtown nightlife, steady economy, and numerous attractions. As the second-largest city in South Carolina, Columbia boasts many historic monuments, a variety of higher education options, and Fort Jackson, the United States Army’s largest installation for basic combat training. Nearby, Forest Acres is known for its great schools and parks. Lexington and Irmo have seen steady population growth due to their low crime rates and excellent schools, both surrounding Lake Murray, which offers about 650 miles of shoreline.

Myrtle Beach

Globally recognized as a vacation hotspot, Myrtle Beach can also be a home paradise. Known as the golf capital of the world, the city attracts many with its high tourism and hospitality industry. Just outside the Charlotte, North Carolina border are cities like Tega Cay and Fort Mill. Places to Visit

The Lowcountry

Once you’ve unloaded your SnappyBox and settled into your South Carolina home, it’s time to start exploring. Begin your journey by visiting Fort Sumter, the historic battleground where the Civil War began on April 12, 1861. Confederate artillery fired upon this Federal fort in Charleston Harbor, marking a pivotal moment in American history. Take a boat tour to learn more about Fort Sumter’s significant role in this conflict.

While in the Lowcountry, don’t miss one of the oldest plantations in the South, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. It features one of the country’s most beautiful gardens, house tours, train and boat rides, and a zoo and nature center. Middleton Place is renowned for being America’s oldest landscaped gardens, while Rainbow Row boasts pastel-colored Georgian homes with rich histories. Charleston, or Chucktown, also offers the South Carolina Aquarium, home to more than 4,500 animals.

In Myrtle Beach, another key attraction is Ripley’s Aquarium, located at Broadway at the Beach. Enjoy the SkyWheel, a Ferris wheel soaring over 20 stories above the Atlantic Ocean. You can also feed alligators at Alligator Adventure, visit the Hollywood Wax Museum, and explore many other attractions. Myrtle Beach is a popular destination, but be sure to visit other South Carolina bodies of water. Ride bicycles at Hilton Head Island’s Coligny Beach Park, relax on the sand at Isle of Palms, or rent a cabin at Lake Jocassee.

The Columbia Area

In Columbia, Lake Murray is the area’s jewel for vacationing, fishing, and boating. Join thousands of visitors at the Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Garden, home to over 2,000 animals and stunning gardens. Columbia is also home to the largest museum in the state, the South Carolina State Museum. This museum features four floors of exhibits, a digital dome planetarium, and a 4D interactive theater, showcasing South Carolina’s art, science, technology, and history.
